OS/390 Workload-Based Performance Management
Duration: 5.0 Days
Overview:
Are you new to performance management? Do you need to know how to establish a practical performance management program for your OS/390 system? Learn to work with the Workload Manager (WLM) in goal mode. This course includes concepts of the WLM, and performance management in the OS/390 system using the WLM. Discuss both monoplex, and sysplex environments. Learn how to analyze Resource Monitoring Facility (RMF) reports, and implement service definitions via the WLM Interactive System Production Facility (ISPF) application.
Case studies are used to reinforce the concepts and techniques discussed in lecture. The course material assumes that the OS/390 system in your location is already running in goal mode. To learn about migration to goal mode for experienced performance individuals, OS/390 Workload Manager Goal Mode Migration (H4013) is recommended. Hands-on lab projects may be done in teams depending on the number of attendees and location.
Who Should Take This Course:
OS/390 system programmers, OS/390 performance analysts, and OS/390 performance administrators who are new to performance management are eligible.
Experienced system performance management individuals should attend OS/390 Workload Manager Goal Mode Migration (H4013) to become familiar with Work Load Manager and goal mode. ES540 is intended for individuals new to the performance area.
What You Are Taught:
- Describe performance and tuning methodology
- Develop a systematic OS/390 performance and tuning plan
- Describe the factors which could affect the performance of an OS/390 system
- Use the WLM ISPF application
- Describe service definition components
- Define workloads, service levels, and classification rules
- State which OS/390 commands affect WLM operation
- Identify major WLM services for OS/390
- Demonstrate the scheduling environment
- State how the application environment can aid in managing workloads
- Explain RMF functions and facilities
- Analyze performance bottlenecks using RMF
- List examples of how data-in-memory techniques can improve I/O performance
Topics Include:
- Introduction to Performance Management in OS/390
- WLM Implementation
- RMF
