OS/390 System Services Structure

Duration: 5.0 Days

Overview:

Learn the functions, structures, and major control blocks of the major OS/390 Base Control Program (BCP) components and system services. Learn how to identify opportunities and requirements for tailoring the OS/390 initialization process and, system environment.

Detailed prerequisites:

  • Describe OS/390 characteristics (multi-processing, multi-programming, virtual storage and paging, and multiple address space architecture)
  • Explain how paging and swapping are accomplished through the interaction of central, expanded, auxiliary, and virtual storage in an OS/390 system
  • Explain the role of the OS/390 Dispatcher, interrupts, supervisor call instructions, program manager, and serialization in managing work in an OS/390 system
  • State the role of OS/390 software and S/390 hardware components in handling an I/O request for data on a direct access storage device (DASD)

Who Should Take This Course:

People with six months experience in the OS/390 environment, responsible for installation, customization, measurement, and tuning of OS/390 are eligible.

What You Are Taught:

  • Explain the OS/390 Base Communication Processor (BCP) functions and control blocks necessary to support a task in a multi-tasking and multi-processing environment
  • Describe OS/390 functions that allow a program to interact with programs running in other address spaces, use data in other address spaces, and use data in data spaces
  • Trace the flow of an I/O operation from the initial request through the completion of the data transfer
  • Describe OS/390 BCP virtual, real, and auxiliary storage manager functions
  • Describe the function of the S/390 Coupling Facility Extended Services (XES) in managing storage shared among systems in a S/390 Parallel Sysplex
  • Describe the functions performed by the Recovery Termination Manager, and Recovery Management Support components to minimize failure impact and enhance error correction
  • Describe the functions provided by the Recovery Resource Manager Services

Topics Include:

  • OS/390 Initialization Process
  • Task Management
  • Address ability
  • I/O Processing
  • Storage Management
  • Recovery Termination Manager.
