REXX Programming for MVS
Duration: 2 Days
Overview:
This course is not included in the IBM Education Card Program.
This course introduces the REXX environment and basic REXX coding. Learn how to code program flow instructions, manipulate data, apply REXX as a command language, and access the debugging and data storage facilities.
This is a single use license copy of the software download.
Who Should Take This Course:
Application and system programmers with at least one year of experience using one or more languages are eligible.
What You Are Taught:
- Write statements and create programs using REXX terminal input-output instructions, simple variables, expression operators and built-in functions
- Use conditional constructs, loops, subroutines, procedures and functions to control program flow
- Implement complex data structures and use parsing instructions to manipulate data
- Process and store large amounts of data using the stack and data sets
- Debug REXX routines using REXX debugging facilities and special variables
- Use REXX features to interact with external routines and services
Topics Include:
- The REXX Environment
- Describe the evolution of REXX and its use today as a programming and command language
- Begin a REXX program, structure the code for the program, utilize user input and run the program
- Use simple variables and write string, arithmetic and logical expressions in REXX
- Use REXX string manipulation, formatting, arithmetic and system information functions
- Coding Program Flow Instructions and Manipulating Data
- Create complex data structures using REXX complex variables
- Code conditional and looping constructs in REXX
- Write programs using variables that are evaluated and executed as statements
- Code subroutines, procedures and functions
- Parse a character string into one or more variable according to a specified template
- Accessing the Debugging and Data Storage Facilities
- Implement LIFO and FIFO lists on the stack
- Read from, write to and update data sets in REXX programs
- Debug REXX programs using tracing facilities and special variables
