SMP/E Fundamentals

Duration: 5.0 Days

Overview:

Learn the skills necessary to use the current release of the System Modification Program/Extended (SMP/E) to install, and maintain OS/390 and its base elements, and optional features. Learn to define the SMP/E database and invoke SMP/E to add, modify, or replace system elements. Hands-on labs are incorporated to learn the necessary tasks to prepare the SMP/E environment and install products and services. Lab projects may be done in teams depending on number of attendees and location.

Who Should Take This Course:

System programmers with no prior SMP/E experience who plan to use SMP/E for system, or subsystem maintenance and installation.

What You Are Taught:

  • Describe how SMP/E is used as a tool for system maintenance
  • Interpret Modification Control Statements in a System Modification (SYSMOD)
  • Create a Consolidated Software Inventory data base to support installation, and maintenance requirements
  • Manage exception SYSMOD data
  • Describe the use of the primary, and secondary data sets required by SMP/E
  • Analyze output from SMP/E processing, and resolve commonly encountered problems
  • Create a function SYSMOD from either a target zone and libraries, or distribution zone and libraries using the BUILDMCS command
