DB2 for OS/390 System Performance and Tuning

Duration: 4 Days

Overview:

This course discusses DB2 on the OS/390 platform. Learn to monitor and tune DB2 systems. This involves optimizing parameters in OS/390, IRLM, CICS, and IMS, as well as in DB2 itself. This course addresses those performance options as well as the DB2 statistics and performance traces needed to identify performance problems in DB2 and its attachments.
This course features sessions in which the class evaluates performance monitor reports from student systems. Please bring your own DB2 PM reports (Statistics, Accounting, and System Parameters reports are appropriate). Bringing your own reports is highly recommended but not required.

Who Should Take This Course:

Systems administrators, system programmers, or database administrators involved in monitoring or tuning DB2 systems.

What You Are Taught:

  • Monitor and tune DB2 buffer pools, the EDM pool, logging, and IRLM execution
  • Tune DB2 attachments and utilities
  • Analyze locking bottlenecks
  • Communicate with OS/390 systems personnel about DB2-related parameters
  • Monitor and control the DB2 workload
  • Interpret DB2 statistics and accounting reports
  • Interpret various RMF reports
  • List guidelines which enhance DB2 system performance

Topics Include:

  • Traces
  • Workload monitoring and control
  • Overview of OS/390 interface and RMF reports
  • Buffer pools and EDM pool
  • Logging performance factors
  • Attachment performance factors
  • The IRLM, locking and contention
  • Utilities performance factors
  • Overview of SQL access paths

Prerequisites:

Take one of the following:

  • DB2 for OS/390 Database Administration Workshop (CF830)
  • DB2 for OS/390 System Administration Workshop (CF850)
