MVS/ESA Diagnostic Data and Procedures

Overview:
Learn how to isolate system problems to a component level. Learn the Interactive Problem Control System (IPCS) to collect and analyze data for problem determination. Use traces such as, System Trace (ST), Generalized Trace Facility (GTF), and Component Trace (CT) to collect and analyze diagnostic data. The use of SLIP to collect data in a single and multi-system environment will be discussed. The diagnostic data produced by Recovery Termination Manager (RTM), Input/Output Supervisor (IOS), Virtual Storage Manager (VSM), Real Storage Manager (RSM), and Auxiliary Storage Manager (ASM) will be analyzed.
Who Should Take This Course:
Individuals responsible for MVS/ESA problem analysis are eligible.
What You Are Taught:
- Determine appropriate data to be collected for problem identification
- Use IPCS to view and interpret diagnostic data from varying sources
- Describe system status at the time of the dump
- Describe recent system history using SYSLOG data, LOGREC data, and system trace tables
- Use GTF or CT to collect diagnostic data
- Execute a systematic approach to isolate the failing component in SVC and stand-alone dumps
- List problem symptoms to facilitate problem reporting
- Set a SLIP trap to gather the required data at the error
